Yakusugi

<Anecdote>

As a symbol of eternal youth and longevity, it is prized as a precious and auspicious wood, with the pun on the meaning of "misfortune will pass."

<Production area>

A natural cedar that grows in the mountains at altitudes of over 500m on Yakushima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture.

<Features>

Among the cedars on Yakushima, those that are over 1000 years old are called "Yakusugi".
The wood has a clear grain and a bamboo-like pattern of the top grain, giving it a special beauty, and it is characterized by its ability to withstand complex grain patterns. The wood is hard and contains six times more resin than normal, making it antiseptic, antibacterial, and insect-repellent, and it retains a unique fragrance even after processing. Currently, felling of this wood is prohibited, so only wood from before the ban and fallen trees (thinned wood) are in circulation, making it an extremely rare, high-quality wood.

<Color Tone>

The heartwood is reddish brown in color.

<Applications>

It is used as a high-quality material for building materials, ceiling panels, drop ceilings, transoms, furniture, and crafts.
