Karin (Knob Grain)
<Anecdote>
Based on the play on words, it is believed that planting a quince tree in the front of one's garden and a oak tree in the back will bring prosperity to one's business, as the saying goes, "lend money but don't borrow."
<Production area>
Taiwan, Northern Thailand
<Features>
It is reddish brown to yellowish brown in color with clear annual rings. It has light and dark stripes and occasionally produces beautiful burl wood.
It is heavy and hard with little warping or cracking, and has good workability. Because it has cross grain, it is prone to reverse grain, so care must be taken when planing. It shines when polished, but changes little over time.
<Color Tone>
The sapwood and heartwood are clearly distinguished, with the sapwood being pale yellowish white and the heartwood being reddish brown with a slight purple tint. The grain is interlaced, and a ribbon pattern appears on the straight grain surface.
<Applications>
Furniture, equipment, musical instruments, Karaki Buddhist altars, etc. As a building material, it is used for floor pillars and floor coverings, and as a vehicle material, for paneling and floor coverings, etc.
