It is reddish brown to yellowish brown in color with clear annual rings. It has light and dark stripes, and occasionally produces beautiful burl wood. It is heavy and hard with little warping or cracking, and has good workability. Because it has cross grain, it is prone to reverse grain, so care must be taken when planing. It shines when polished, but changes little over time.
