Kiso Hinoki/Cypress
<Features>
It is one of the five most representative woods of Kiso and is the best quality conifer in the world.
The annual rings are slightly unclear and light yellowish brown to light pink. The wood has fine grain and a pleasant aroma.
It has been used as a building material since ancient times, as it retains its strength for hundreds of years even after being felled and is highly durable. It is used in many shrines and temples, including Horyuji Temple.
Among these, Kiso cypress is particularly used in the construction of the Ise Grand Shrine, which is rebuilt every 20 years (Shikinen Sengu), and is considered to be the best building material.
<Production area>
This species is endemic to Japan and is found from central Honshu through Shikoku and Kyushu to Yakushima.
<Applications>
It is primarily used in luxury construction, but also for bathtubs due to its unique pleasant fragrance and water resistance.
Kiso Hinoki hats, made by thinly shaving and weaving, are used for a wide range of purposes, from chopsticks to small items, due to their lightness and moderate hardness. They are also used in the world's oldest wooden structure, Horyuji Temple, and many shrines and temples.
